The Gladys Porter Zoo is a historic zoo in Brownsville, which opened its doors on September 3, 1971. The zoo covers a land area of 31 acres (13 ha) and is home to over 1,600 animals from 400 different species. The zoo attracts an annual visitor count of 375,000+. The Gladys Porter Zoo is also the birthplace of Harambe, a gorilla that gained worldwide fame in 2016 after being shot and killed at the Cincinnati Zoo.
The Gladys Porter Zoo is currently at risk of losing its accreditation as a zoo. GreenZone aims to use blockchain technology to preserve all history in the city of Brownsville, including the Gladys Porter Zoo.
